The Jazz Singer (1927)

I finally saw The Jazz Singer (1927) with Al Jolson, the first movie with talking sequences. The story of a cantor's son defying his father's traditions by singing popular tunes was dated even then, but Jolson carries it with his charm and music. The spoken scene between he and his mama is charming and seems to be ad-libbed. Eugenie Besserer is charming as mama. Plus, it's fun to imagine how the original audiences were wowed by the talking and singing.
